Tdot a.k.a The Screwface Capital

Canada has so much talent that it’s bursting out the seams. Artists all over in the hip hop and urban scene hear that Toronto is like the equivalent to NY for exposure. And, perhaps it is. But another thing that Toronto is known all too well for is that it’s The Screwface Capital. Some of us just have this oppressive mind state when it comes to our urban music culture. Why is that? Could it also be that some remain so Americanized that they’ve lost interest in their local Canadian talent? Could it also be a marketing issue?

I’ve seen it happen too many times. A new artist, gets their CD pressed and distributed to music stores, and it just stops there. Because all the money went into recording, mastering and distributing the CD. No commercial spots, radio and marketing. So the CD gets lost on store shelves and unnoticed by an already unresponsive city. “We’ve obviously got forces to deal with that keep pounding down on us, just random instances of the daily grind – agency jobs where you’re working at minimum wage, wack TTC drivers giving you hassles about dropping change,” says Theology 3, a Toronto rapper who coined the term screwface capital back in 2000.

Has this really become our identity? It was even reported that 50 Cent walked off the stage at Circa nightclub complaining that, Screwface City crowd wasn’t into it enough. How sad. 50 Cent is one of hip hops best selling artists to date. But, then again fiddy’s music today is all about marketing. A far cry from his first album. On second thought, maybe our screwface title isn’t always a bad thing.

As gloomy as our urban music landscape may seem, I’ve noticed some changes. The artists are reaching out to each other more as well as encouraging fans to get to know them and their music through the likes of Facebook and other social websites. The

seemingly showing a lot more support to local up and coming talent. This oppressive mind state seems to be lifting…A little. With artists like K-OS, K’naan, Drake, Theology 3 and Kardinal Offishall and so many others paving the way for other hip hop artists from Canada, things are certainly changing for the better. Block Basics Productions BBP is a company that is also seeking to do just that, as well as strengthening the Canadian market through the multimedia/telecommunications industry. So if we find that we’re stuck with this screwface stigma then I leave you these words of President Obama, “Yes, we can change.”

Ronald Fenty: Rihanna's father

Check this out, Rihanna’s father sat down with Us Weekly and spoke about the Chrianna situation. Here’s what he had to say:

“Justice can never be served in this situation. He can’t feel the pain she felt.” He adds, I don’t know how to react. Chris is a very talented guy. I still think he’s a little immature for Rihanna. Justice can never be served in this situation. He can’t feel the pain she felt. I don’t believe in hitting a woman. I hope everything works out better for them. I don’t feel happy or sad. He’s in the court’s hands. Let justice prevail.”

And if Mr. Fenty meets Chris Brown, he would tell Chris, “Don’t ever try it again, don’t even think about it”.

Terrell Owens

Terrell Owens signed with the Buffalo Bills on Saturday for a reported $6.5 million deal with a $4 million signing bonus. This comes as a surprise to most people because T.O is one of the most well known sports figures coming from Philadelphia and Dallas now playing for Buffalo, a smaller market but with a dedicated fan base. I’m quite interested to see how Owens will perform on the Bills.

Chris Brown, pictured in court on Thursday, March 5th in Downtown Los Angeles during his arraignment. Brown and his attorney Mark Geragos did not enter a plea to the two felony assault charges he was hit with early Thursday morning and requested a continuance to April 6th, which the judge granted.

While in open court, the judge told Brown (who has some new found age lines on his forehead) that he was not to, “annoy, harass, molest, threaten or use force or violence against anyone.”

The judge also asked Mark Geragos if there was a “no-contact order” between Brown and Robyn Rihanna Fenty in place, to which Geragos replied, “Miss Fenty does not request such an order.”

Rihanna was not present in court, but was represented by her attorney, Donald Etra.

Tupac Shakur

During the time Tupac Shakur was serving his prison sentence in 1995, his multi-platinum album Me Against The World was released and like the workaholic that he was, he wrote an entire screenplay called Live 2 Tell. Since 2007, there’s been speculation of this screenplay being converted into a feature film. At the same time there’s another film (biopic) that his mother Afeni Shakur and directors fighting over in court.

On the other hand, Live 2 Tell is an original screenplay written by Tupac. It’s about a drug kingpin, who wants out of the game. Tupac’s mother has the executive producer credit and the movie rights are with Insomnia Productions. Here’s the official synopsis.

A charismatic young man at the dawn of adulthood spirals down the wrong path in life and is brought into the underworld by his once trusted mentor, only to become one of the most powerful and feared kingpins in the city. Eventually his conscience gets the better of him and he is driven to self redemption in life… and love.

Will we ever end up seeing this film by Tupac or his biopic? It will be interesting to see how everything pans out because both his biopic and his screenplay are in high demand but his mother Afeni wants it to be done right. Can you blame her? Any thoughts?
